Bravus Mining & Resources

Bravus Mining and Resources owns and operates the Carmichael mine in central Queensland

Owning and operating the Carmichael coal mine

Bravus Mining and Resources has a focus on local jobs and procurement, ensuring we make a positive contribution to the communities in which we operate.

We are one of Australia’s leading responsible miners.

Providing local opportunities

Bravus Mining and Resources developed, built, and delivered the Carmichael Project: the Carmichael mine and the Carmichael Rail Network.

The three-year construction phase delivered more than $1 billion in contracts to regional Queensland businesses and created more than 2600 direct jobs. This led to about 9000 indirect jobs.

All this meant a boost to the communities around central Queensland. Our regional headquarters are in located in Townsville, and Rockhampton.

We are proudly local, supporting regional communities and businesses to grow sustainably.

Operating the Carmichael Coal Mine

The Carmichael mine is an open cut thermal coal mine in the Galilee Basin. The nearest town is Clermont, about 160km away, and the mine is more than 300km inland from the Queensland coast.

The Carmichael mine produces in the order of 10 million tonnes of coal each year for the export market. It is one of more than 100 coal mines in Australia.

At peak production, the thermal coal extracted from the Carmichael Mine will contribute less than 2.6 per cent of Australia’s exports in 2018-2019.

Backing our communities

Bravus supports the local communities in which we operate. Bravus Mining and Resources maintains close relationships with regional Queensland development organisations, community groups and charities.

Our community Partnership Program has assisted local not-for-profit groups across central and north Queensland since 2018.

Bravus Mining also sponsors the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy school programs, as well as the Queensland Resources Council and Women in Mining and Resources Queensland (WIMARQ) Girls’ Mentoring Program. These programs educate young people about the resources and mining industries.

Committed to our safety, environmental and sustainability standards

Bravus Mining and Resources is committed to respecting the environment in which we operate. The Carmichael Project has some of the strictest environmental conditions ever imposed on a mining project in Australia. Our environmental plans and strategies were prepared by scientific experts and many of these plans also reviewed by third-party specialists.

These strict environmental conditions are in place across the entire project, to reduce the Carmichael Mine's environmental impact and ensure healthy air, land and water in areas in which we operate.

Working with First Nations People

Bravus Mining and Resources recognises the Traditional Owners of the lands of the Carmichael Project, the Wangan and Jagalingou, Juru, Jangga and Birriah peoples.

Bravus Mining and Resources signed Indigenous Land Use Agreements with Traditional Owners from the Wangan and Jagalingou People, Jangga People, Birriah People and Juru People. These voluntary agreements determine future development and set frameworks for working together for mutual benefit for current and future generations.

We also developed and implement rigorous Cultural Heritage Management Plans to preserve important sites and practices.
